This is an essay I wrote for uni last year. I’ve decided to post it now because of SOPA act that is currently before the US Congress. The essay is kind of related as it talks about laws regarding I.T security that are too broad. It’s a bit like killing mice in your house with a shotgun – sure you’ll kill the mouse but the collateral damage will be far worse.

I believe we need to keep the internet free and open. It is the last bastion of free speech where people can rave and rant about anything whether the government or corporate powers like it or not. The Arab Spring that saw freedom come to Egypt and Libya was powered by a free and open internet. If governments are trying to stop free speech on the internet by passing the SOPA and PIPA bills (US Congress) then what are they afraid of? What are they trying to hide? Who’s interests are they protecting? – Rupert Murdoch’s that’s whose.
